The first earthquake of magnitude 7.7 was recorded at a depth of 10 km at a distance of 253 km northwest of Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw. 12 minutes later, at a distance of 28 km south of the city of Mandalay, the cultural and religious capital of the country, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 followed.
It is already known that five children and a novice died as a result of the collapse of the monastery in the city of Taungu. This is reported by the Eleven Myanmar portal. In South Shan State, the building of the Aung Pan Hotel collapsed, two people were killed, about twenty were trapped under the rubble, the Burmese portal DVB reports.
Eyewitness footage shows that as a result of the rampant disaster in Mandalay, a bridge over the Irrawaddy River and several buildings collapsed. The historic Mandalay Palace was partially damaged. In the capital, Naypyidaw, an earthquake damaged religious shrines, causing parts of them to collapse to the ground.
The earthquake was felt not only in Myanmar, but also in Thailand, Vietnam and China due to the fact that there are several major crustal faults in the region.
What happens in Bangkok after the earthquake
The most powerful effects were felt in Bangkok, where a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded. The earthquake was so strong that water splashed out of pools located in high-rise buildings. An evacuation has been announced in the city, and a state of emergency has been introduced.
A high-rise building under construction collapsed in the Chatuchak market area, The Sun reports. The published footage shows workers in hard hats trying to escape from the flying debris. According to Thai PBS, one worker died as a result of the incident, 43 more are under the rubble.
The metro is also not working in the city, and traffic jams have formed on the roads. There are interruptions in communication and the Internet. Airports were closed all over Thailand.
The Meteorological Department of Thailand has warned of the risk of aftershocks in the near future after a powerful earthquake in Myanmar. The department urged to be careful and stay outside.
The Russian Embassy in Thailand is clarifying the situation regarding possible casualties among Russians. According to preliminary estimates by the Association of Tour Operators (ATOR), up to 2,000 Russians may be in the region. At the same time, tourists in Phuket, Pattaya and the islands continue to rest normally, ATOR said. The epicenter of the earthquake is located far from the islands, and the fault lines run higher along the mainland of the country.
As Peter Shebalin, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences, Director of the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics, explained to RT, such phenomena are typical for the region. However, this time there is no threat of a tsunami, since the earthquake was located far from the ocean.
