The French prosecutor's office has demanded that former President Nicolas Sarkozy be sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign. This was announced on March 27 by BFMTV.

The department also requested a fine of € 300,000 for the former head of state and the inability to be elected for 5 years.

The ex-president is being tried for "illegal financing of the election campaign," "passive corruption," "concealment of embezzlement of public funds," and "criminal conspiracy," the report says.

In 2013, the French justice system, while investigating the Sarkozy case, received testimony from French-Lebanese businessman Ziyad Takieddine, who claimed to have evidence of this financing. He said that he handed over three suitcases with banknotes to the French Ministry of the Interior, which at that time was headed by Nicolas Sarkozy. During the check, investigators discovered a payment of 500,000 euros from abroad to one of the bank accounts of the former head of his election campaign, Claude Gueant. It is noted that throughout the whole process he was confused in his testimony.

Earlier, on February 7, Sarkozy was ordered to wear an electronic bracelet as part of the execution of the sentence in the case of "wiretapping."

In October 2023, the former president was charged with double charges in the case of foreign financing of the 2007 election campaign. The investigation believes that the funds for Sarkozy's re-election were allocated by former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

In the spring of 2018, Gaddafi's former translator, Miftah Missouri, confirmed the financing of Sarkozy's election campaign by the Libyan leader.
