- Putin instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to expand the capabilities of ports in the Arctic

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to expand the capabilities of ports in the Arctic and work on the construction of new harbors. He announced this on March 27 at the plenary session of the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk.
"In order to increase the logical stability of the Transarctic corridor, I ask the government to identify plans to expand the capacity of existing seaports in the Arctic. And also where and at what points of the Arctic coast new ports should appear," the head of state said.
He stressed that first of all it is necessary to connect the sea harbors with the country's railway network.
Putin also called for the implementation of the project for the development of the Arctic Railway range, including the modernization of the Northern Railway in the Komi Republic and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. He stressed the importance of developing the project now in order to open up new transport opportunities for the regions of Siberia, the Urals and North-West Russia.
"We know the current situation with the development of Russian Railways, we know what challenges the company faces — everything is well known. But we need to think about this, about what I just said, about the development of the Northern Railway right now, today," the president concluded.
On the same day, Putin noted the need to come up with concrete solutions for the development of the Arctic. The Head of State drew the Government's attention to the fact that the necessary decisions have not yet been taken and a model for the development of sea routes has not been drawn up. He stressed that the implementation of projects that are important for the development of the Arctic region and Russia as a whole should not be postponed.
