The European Union (EU) countries are deliberately obstructing the agreement between Russia and the United States on the Black Sea initiative amid increased sanctions pressure and demands for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. This opinion was put forward by the Responsible Statecraft publication on March 26.

"There is a feeling that the EU is putting sticks in the wheels of the sensational agreement between Russia and the United States on a cease—fire in the Black Sea," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory may negatively affect the course of a peaceful settlement between Moscow and Washington, which is already "delicate" at the moment.

The authors of the article also clarified that the EU's principled position against lifting any sanctions remains a serious problem.

During negotiations on March 24 in Riyadh, Russia and the United States agreed to ensure safe navigation, exclude the use of force and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea.

Later, on March 25, US President Donald Trump said at the White House that the implementation of the armistice agreement in the Black Sea was the least of all problems.

Recently, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres positively assessed the agreements reached between the delegations of Russia, the United States and Ukraine during the talks in Riyadh. It was noted that the agreement on freedom of navigation in the Black Sea to protect civilian vessels and port infrastructure would make a significant contribution to global food security and global supplies.
