The Federation Council approved at a meeting a law on the establishment of the Day of the end of the Leningrad Battle on August 9, the day of military glory. This was announced on March 27 on the website of the upper house of Parliament.
It is specified that the document was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Amendments to Article 1 of the Federal Law "On Days of Military Glory and Memorable Dates of Russia" have been approved regarding the establishment of a new day of military glory "August 9 is the Day of the end of the Leningrad Battle (1944)," the publication says.
Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Vladimir Bulavin noted that the recognition of this date underlines the strategic importance of the Leningrad Battle, which was the longest battle of the Great Patriotic War. During it, over 50 enemy divisions were destroyed.
The result of the Leningrad Battle was not only the complete elimination of threats to Leningrad, but also the liberation of the Leningrad, Pskov, Novgorod regions and Karelia, as well as the destruction of the "Finnish blockade link."
