In Germany, they called on the new government to return the draft to the Bundeswehr

Three former members of the Bundestag defense committee from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) called on the new government to consolidate the return of military service in the coalition agreement amid the worsening situation in the world. Tagesspiegel writes about this on March 27.
Former SPD defense commissioner Hans-Peter Bartels said that the time of the volunteer army has passed and the Bundeswehr will not be able to adapt to the current situation without conscription.
"The time of peaceful dividends with a purely volunteer army has irrevocably passed. Without the revival of military service in an adapted form, the Bundeswehr will not become bigger, more efficient and more efficient," Bartels said.
He called for an increase in the size of the army to at least 250,000 over the next four years.
Former CDU Defense Commissioner Claire Marienfeld-Chesla said she also supports a return to conscription under the pretext of strengthening Germany's defense capability.
Reinhold Robbe, the former SPD defense commissioner, clarified that the current global situation is not like in 2011, when the army completely switched to a contractual basis, and added that military service should extend to women.
According to the newspaper, the position on the return of the conscription army from the former SPD defense commissioners contradicts the position of their own party in the coalition negotiations. The SPD believes that "the new military service should be based on volunteerism."
Earlier, on February 24, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc, which won the parliamentary elections, to provide funding for new spending on the armed forces as soon as possible. He clarified that Germany has the opportunity to double the budget of his department in the coming years.
On February 23, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in a congratulatory message to the union's leader Friedrich Merz, pointed out the importance of increasing defense spending in Europe. He also clarified that he expects the opportunity to work with Merz at a "crucial moment" for the security of the continent.
