Protests demanding fair elections in Romania took place in Bucharest.

A protest rally organized by the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party took place in front of the government headquarters in Bucharest. This was reported on March 26 by Agerpres agency.

It is noted that several thousand protesters demanded fair elections in Romania, as well as a return to a democratic and constitutional course. The protesters waved national flags and blew vuvuzelas.

According to the agency, the demonstration was approved by the Commission for Reviewing applications for organizing public meetings of the Bucharest City Hall.

In addition, several hundred people in the Romanian capital marched in front of the Parliament Palace in support of former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. The demonstration was held on the occasion of his birthday.

On March 9, Romania's Central Election Commission (CEC) refused to register Kalina Georgescu as a candidate for the presidential election, claiming that the documents submitted by him did not comply with the requirements of the law. On March 11, the country's Constitutional Court upheld the CEC's decision. On the same day, Georgescu called the decision to suspend him from the elections a blow to democracy.

State Duma deputy, Chairman of the Council of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Eurasia" Alyona Arshinova pointed out the risk of protests in Romania after the refusal to register a politician. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, called Georgescu's non-admission a violation of all norms of democracy. According to him, any elections that take place without a candidate will be illegitimate.
