Hutsul's lawyer called the detention of the head of Gagauzia unnecessary

The detention of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, at Chisinau airport was unnecessary, since the alleged actions date back to 2023. Her lawyer Natalia Bayram told Izvestia about this on March 26.

According to the defense, the interrogation as a suspect took place on Wednesday, March 26, although Hutsul was detained on the evening of March 25. At the same time, as Bayram noted, the charges should be filed no later than March 27.

Repressions against the opposition have intensified in Moldova, as it advocates improving relations with Moscow.

The detention of Hutsul at the Chisinau airport without explanation became known on the same day. The Pobeda block reported that the head of Gagauzia was supposed to fly to Istanbul, where she was scheduled to meet. According to the Prosecutor General's Office of Moldova, the politician was detained after her name appeared on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country.

Later, the head of Gagauzia was taken to the National Anti-Corruption Center (NAC) of Moldova, and her lawyers are with her. The NAC reported that in the near future, Hutsul will be formally charged with violating the procedure for managing election funds, illegally financing election competitors and falsifying documents, and prosecutors will request the court to place her under preliminary arrest.
