The Sudanese armed forces have liberated the capital Khartoum from the rebel formations of the Rapid Reaction Forces. This was stated on March 26 by the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army and the head of the country's Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as quoted by Al Jazeera TV channel.

"Khartoum is free," al-Burhan said.

As indicated in the material, soldiers cordoned off areas around the airport in the Sudanese capital, which became a key event in the two-year conflict between the Sudanese military and the militants of the Rapid Reaction Forces (RFS). The army also took control of both sides of the Manshiya Bridge, which crosses the Blue Nile in Khartoum, leaving the Jebel Awliya Bridge south of the capital as the only exit from the area still under the control of the SBR, the publication said.

On September 26, it was reported about a large-scale offensive by the Sudanese army on the capital Khartoum to oust the SBR militants from the city and about fierce fighting. At that time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Russia was concerned about what was happening in Sudan and was trying to facilitate a settlement.

The situation in Sudan escalated in mid-April 2023 due to disagreements between the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the head of the Security Council, Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. On the morning of April 15, clashes between the army and special forces began near the military base in the city of Meroe and in Khartoum. Due to the ongoing conflict, a humanitarian crisis has arisen in the country, which has led to famine and outbreaks of disease.
