The detention of the head of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, is a "continuation" of events in Romania, where opposition politician Calin Georgescu was denied registration for the elections. This was stated to Izvestia on March 26 by Vadim Trukhachev, a political scientist, associate professor at the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Foreign Regional Studies at the Russian State University of Economics.

According to him, candidates for EU membership should adhere to the position of the European Union and NATO, which implies the exclusion from the presidential elections of participants who oppose conflicts with Russia.

"At any cost, Moldova, as a candidate for EU membership, must follow the military discipline of the EU and NATO, mainly the EU, in relation to Russia. And within the framework of this military discipline, candidates who oppose confrontation with the Russian Federation should be excluded from the elections. What was done to Georgescu is now being repeated to the Hutsuls in Moldova," he explained.

Trukhachev stressed that the entourage of Moldovan President Maia Sandu and herself, having Romanian citizenship, act the same way as the leaders of "their country."

"It's all in the logic of wartime," the political scientist concluded.

The detention of Hutsul at the Chisinau airport without explanation became known on the same day. The Pobeda block reported that the head of Gagauzia was supposed to fly to Istanbul, where she was scheduled to meet. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, the politician was detained after her name appeared on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country.

Later, the head of Gagauzia was taken to the National Anti-Corruption Center (NAC) of Moldova, with her lawyers. The NAC reported that in the near future, Hutsul will be formally charged with violating the procedure for managing election funds, illegally financing election competitors and falsifying documents, and prosecutors will request the court to place her under preliminary arrest.
