The detention of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, may have an unpredictable effect on the current Moldovan authorities. Vasily Bolya, a member of the Moldovan parliament and a former presidential candidate from the Victory bloc, told Izvestia on March 26.

"I think the effect is unpredictable for the current authorities. It is clear that recently they have been escalating the situation inside the country," he said.

According to the politician, the Moldovan authorities "have nothing to boast about," as the economic and social situation in the country is very difficult.

"Our authorities are doing everything possible to tighten their regime instead of dealing with the economic situation and improving the social situation of citizens. The current authorities have started to tighten the screws," the deputy said.

He noted that recently the Moldovan leadership has been increasingly saying that it is necessary to resolve the issue with Gagauzia.

"They saw how Gagauzia, the inhabitants of this region voted in the referendum, how they voted in the presidential election, giving more than 95% of the votes not in favor of the referendum and not in favor of the president of the country," Bolya stressed.

The authorities took an unprecedented step, "trying to stitch together the case of illegal financing," the politician concluded.

The detention of Hutsul at the Chisinau airport without explanation became known on March 25. The Pobeda block reported that the head of Gagauzia was supposed to fly to Istanbul, where she had meetings scheduled. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, the politician was detained after her name appeared on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country.

Later, the head of Gagauzia was taken to the National Anti-Corruption Center (NAC) of Moldova, with her lawyers. Supporters of the Hutsul and the Moldovan opposition gathered outside the building, and the authorities pulled police forces into the area. Later, the National Security Council reported that in the near future Hutsul would be formally charged with violating the procedure for managing election funds, illegally financing election competitors and falsifying documents, and prosecutors would request the court to place her under preliminary arrest.
