Statements about NATO taking control of supplies to Ukraine instead of the United States are a PR campaign by the European Union (EU) and an attempt to influence American leader Donald Trump. This was stated to Izvestia on March 26 by former special forces officer, retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk.

The day before, The Times newspaper published an interview with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, in which he stated that Ukraine does not have money to finance the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), so the country needs help from Europe, and ideally also from the United States. At the same time, the Ukrainian leader stressed that he was inclined to rely more on the EU.

"After all, the United States is still the main player in NATO. If they do not give equipment and weapons (to Ukraine. — Ed.), where will NATO get all this? The fact is that the European Union is independent of NATO. They have shown that they have no equipment, no weapons, and even more so no money," he said.

According to him, the North Atlantic Alliance is trying to put pressure on Trump through this step. NATO may hope that the American leader can be forced to listen to the EU because of the alliance's decision to take over control of supplies.

An EU summit was held in Brussels on March 20, at which the buildup of the union's military potential was discussed, as well as the allocation of military assistance to Kiev. However, as a result, the states could not come to an agreement to allocate even €5 billion in military aid to Kiev. Then the newspaper Politico reported that Italy, Spain, Portugal and France refused to accept the plan of the head of EU diplomacy, Kai Callas, to provide Ukraine with € 40 billion. It was noted that Callas had not conducted the necessary consultations before submitting it.

On March 24, the German newspaper Die Welt reported that the EU lacks both the strength and the desire to help Ukraine. According to media reports, the leaders of the European Union were mistaken in believing that it could supply as much as the United States. Die Welt also emphasized that Ukraine is in a vulnerable position and Washington will not take into account Kiev's concerns in the upcoming negotiations.
