The thyroid gland regulates many important processes in the body, so problems with it can manifest themselves in various symptoms, some of which are not so specific. Dietitian, endocrinologist at SM Clinic Elvina Binatova told Izvestia on March 27 about the symptoms that should be treated immediately by an endocrinologist.

So, the specialist advised to pay attention to such signs as hair loss, dry skin and brittle nails. According to her, it is often the disorders in the thyroid gland that require a comprehensive examination and competent therapy that are hidden behind this. And trying to solve the problem by taking various dietary supplements, as patients often do, is by no means impossible.

"For example, if anemia is detected, you should not immediately start taking iron-containing drugs. It is important to undergo a comprehensive examination, because anemia can be associated not only with a lack of iron, but also with a malfunction of the thyroid gland, in particular with the level of hormones TSH and T4. Accordingly, in this case, a completely different treatment is required," explained the endocrinologist.

The doctor also noted that many people mistakenly associate such a symptom as the appearance of edema solely with diseases of the kidneys or the cardiovascular system. However, thyroid problems are often the cause of this condition. Therefore, if a nephrologist or cardiologist has not identified any pathologies, it is worth contacting an endocrinologist.

"It is worth noting that the thyroid gland affects many processes in the body, especially in women. For example, noticeable changes in the menstrual cycle, especially in terms of its duration, may signal problems with it. And such an endocrinological disease as hypothyroidism often causes difficulties with conception and bearing a child. Therefore, if pregnancy does not occur or there are difficulties with its preservation, it is worth undergoing an examination by an endocrinologist," concluded Binatova.

Earlier, on March 16, Olga Ulankina, Candidate of medical Sciences, expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia that endocrine diseases most often develop with a shortage or overabundance of a hormone. Failure can occur at any age. Sometimes, in the early stages, people attribute the symptoms of hormonal imbalance to fatigue and lack of sleep.
