The oppositionists who are destroying the Turkish economy and sabotaging it will be brought to justice. This was announced on March 26 by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a speech at a meeting of his party's faction.

"We will bring to justice for sabotage against the economy. The attack on the brotherhood does not go unpunished <...> We have never forgotten and will never forget those who tried to defeat us illegally, those who were so desperate that they set fire to the country and the nation," he was quoted as saying by the OD TV channel.

This is how Erdogan commented on the mass protests after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. During his speech, Erdogan also addressed the Turkish opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), which advocates a political struggle.

According to the Turkish leader, hostility towards the state is due to the fact that the "wheel of robbery" in the country is immediately stopped.

The Turkish President assured that all types of sabotage against the Turkish economy, welfare and tranquility of the nation will be brought to justice.

Law enforcement agencies issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention on March 19. According to media reports, an anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. It concerns the holding of city tenders, as well as clarifying the details of the interaction of opposition officials with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party. The mayor of Istanbul was arrested on March 23 by court order. After that, the country's Interior Ministry reported that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties.

Later, mass protests began in Turkey in connection with the mayor's detention. Local police have detained 1,418 people since the start of the protests. It was reported that the police in Istanbul used tear gas against the protesters. On March 20, the Turkish Interior Minister announced that six policemen had been injured during a protest in Istanbul. Rallies were also held in Ankara.
