The BRICS Journalists Association has appealed to UNESCO in connection with the murders of Russian correspondents while they were performing their professional duties. This was announced to Izvestia on March 26 by Ivan Melnikov, Director of the Department for the Protection of Journalists' Rights at the BRICS Journalists' Association.
He stressed that, in accordance with the Geneva Convention, the killing of correspondents is unacceptable. Journalists and other media workers should enjoy protection in their country or abroad under Article 3 of the Declaration adopted at the 20th session of UNESCO on 28.10.1978.
He asked to take measures and provide assistance to protect Russian journalists and their rights in the current conditions, including the right to freedom of speech.
"One cannot pretend because of political differences that there is no problem with the murders of journalists from Russia and it is necessary to prevent discrimination against Russian journalists," Melnikov wrote in his address to UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay.
In recent days, as a result of the aggression of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), several journalists have been killed at once, including Izvestia military correspondent Alexander Fedorchak, as well as a number of media workers were injured.
Fedorchak's death became known on March 24. According to preliminary data, he died as a result of an artillery strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The military commander worked in the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic (LNR) and the Kharkiv region.
At the same time, on March 24, Andrey Panov, a cameraman for the Zvezda TV channel, and Alexander Sirkeli, the driver of the film crew, died in the special operation zone. They worked on the same set with Fedorchak. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case into the deaths of journalists.
On March 26, it became known that Anna Prokofieva, a military correspondent for Channel One, was killed while performing her professional duty in the Belgorod Region, and cameraman Dmitry Volkov was also injured.
