Russia condemns the detention of the head of the Gagauz Autonomous Region, Yevgenia Hutsul. This was announced on March 26 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"Of course, the current authorities use methods of the most blatant pressure on current politicians who are somehow popular and somehow compete with [the Moldovan president]. Maya Sandu. It is very bad that at the same time they go beyond all democratic norms and principles," he said at a briefing.
The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation suggested that in many ways the Moldovan authorities are copying the behavior of Romania, "where democracy has been trampled on." He admitted that Chisinau chose not to pay attention to legislation, the principles of democracy and political pluralism, but "to exert undisguised pressure on all political competitors."
"Of course, we condemn such actions. <...> Chisinau should abandon such methods and give freedom of action to all political forces in the country," Peskov added.
The detention of Hutsul at the Chisinau airport without explanation became known on March 25. The Pobeda block reported that the head of Gagauzia was supposed to fly to Istanbul, where she had meetings scheduled.
