Representatives of Russia and the United States are thinking about the resumption of work of the Russian Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 gas pipelines. This was stated on March 25 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with Channel One.

"Now, of course, there are disagreements. But is it only the United States and Russia that are interested in restoring Europe's normal energy supply? There is a conversation about Nord Streams," the Russian Foreign Minister said, his words are quoted on the agency's website.

As Lavrov noted, "it will be interesting" if Washington uses its levers of pressure on the European Union (EU) and forces the countries of the community not to abandon gas from the Russian Federation.

"But this is already some kind of surrealism," the minister added.

At the same time, only "sick people or suicides" can speak out against the restoration of Nord Streams in Europe, the Russian Foreign Minister said. Because the EU now pays several times more for energy resources than the business of the United States. He added that people like German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius are already saying that they will never allow the restoration of Russian gas pipelines.

On March 21, the Bild newspaper reported that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline could be placed under U.S. control so that Germany could receive gas from Russia through it. It was noted that in order to implement this option, anti-Russian sanctions should be lifted not only by the American side, but also by the European side.

Leaks on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 gas pipelines were discovered in September 2022. Two powerful underwater explosions were registered on the pipelines. Traces of explosives were found at the accident site. Russia is seeking an international investigation into the attacks. In February 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that the CIA was responsible for the bombings.
