During the Great Patriotic War, scientists took an active part in the fight against the invaders. From the first days of the war, the USSR Academy of Sciences began to create research teams to help the front. Olga Selivanova, Deputy Director of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia about this.

"For example, the very next day after the invasion, an expanded meeting of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences was held, where scientists decided to devote all their efforts to defense tasks," the specialist said.

In particular, when the relocation of scientific institutes to the rear began, scientists immediately launched work to help the front. According to Selivanova, researchers were assigned to enterprises where they, together with engineers, developed new technologies, weapons and materials for the front. Commissions and committees were created for the operational interaction of scientists, industry and the military.

At the same time, the Deputy director of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences explained, fundamental research during the war years also became one of the keys to Victory. For example, mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov defined the most advantageous dispersion of artillery shells, which helped improve the accuracy of guns.
