Major unions of US teachers and human rights activists from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have sued the administration of US President Donald Trump over the decision to liquidate the Ministry of Education. This was reported on March 25 by the Reuters news agency.

"The Trump administration has repeatedly stated its intention to close this vital agency, most recently in an executive order dated March 20, 2025," reads the statement, which was filed with the court.

Two lawsuits were filed: one jointly from the National Education Association (NEA) and the NAACP in Maryland, the other from the Federation of American Teachers (AFT) in the federal court of Massachusetts.

According to the agency, in March alone, more than 1.3 thousand people were dismissed from the Ministry of Education. The authors of the complaint also claim that contracts and grants for research and teacher training worth more than $1.5 billion were canceled.

Earlier, on March 21, it became known that Trump signed a decree abolishing the American Ministry of Education. His powers will be transferred to the state authorities and local communities.
