On March 25, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, Tatyana Moskalkova, announced her intention to seek international organizations to condemn the murders of Russian journalists by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).

The Ombudsman expressed her condolences over the death of the military commander of Izvestia, Aleksander Fedorchak, as well as the operator of the Zvezda channel, Andrei Panov, and the driver of the film crew, Alexander Sirkeli. She wished Mikhail Skuratov, a TASS correspondent wounded in the Kursk region, a speedy recovery.

"We will seek condemnation of these bandit actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe on freedom of the Media, <...>..> the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, UNESCO and the entire community of Ombudsmen," Moskalkova wrote on her Telegram channel.

According to the Ombudsman, the current mechanisms for protecting journalists during military operations need radical changes. She noted that these rules were developed decades ago and no longer meet modern realities.

On March 24, Izvestia correspondent Alexander Fedorchak was killed in a special operation zone as a result of an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on a journalist's car. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the death of a journalist is a new crime of the Ukrainian leadership against freedom of speech, which will not be forgotten.

Later it became known about the deaths of Andrey Panov, the operator of the Zvezda TV channel, and Alexander Sirkeli, the driver of the film crew. It was clarified that the Ukrainian militants had targeted a civilian vehicle with two HIMARS missiles. Nikita Goldin, a correspondent for Zvezda, was also seriously injured as a result of the shelling.
