In Moscow, operatives of the GUUR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, together with employees of the FSB of the Russian Federation, found antique gold coins stolen from the historical museum of Saint-Remy in Reims, France. This was announced on March 25 by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk.
"When checking information about the sale of antique coins at the Moscow antique market, it turned out that they were similar in name and description to the stolen exhibits. A request was sent to France through Interpol channels. Our foreign colleagues have confirmed the theft of gold coins, including rare valuable antique coins minted from the 1st to the 5th century AD," she said.
It is specified that a museum guard was convicted of theft, but then it was not possible to find and return the stolen goods.
As a result of the operational search measures carried out, Russian law enforcement officers found 79 coins in an antique shop and in the possession of several numismatists. The stolen goods were seized.
At the same time, an examination conducted by the State Historical Museum confirmed that the coins are of special historical and cultural value. The total value of the coins is more than 55 million rubles.
"The issue of returning the collection to the permanent exhibition site in France is being resolved," Wolf added.
