UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has decided to reduce the number of international staff by a third amid Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip. This was announced on March 24 by his representative Stephane Dujarric, whose statement was published on the UN website.

It states that last week Israel launched strikes on the Gaza Strip, which claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians, including UN personnel. Humanitarian aid has also not been allowed to enter the sector since early March.

Dujarric pointed out that, based on this, the Secretary General made the difficult decision to reduce the organization's presence in Gaza, but this is a temporary measure.

"The organization remains committed to continuing to provide assistance to civilians whose survival and protection depend on it," Guterres' representative stressed.

Earlier, on March 18, according to The Times of Israel newspaper, more than 1,000 people were injured as a result of strikes by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip. Among the wounded are children, women and the elderly. The Palestinian radical movement Hamas has blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the consequences of the attacks.
