Every year, on March 25, Russia celebrates Cultural Worker's Day, dedicated to artists, representatives of creative professions, employees of museums, theaters, concert halls, libraries and other specialists involved in the preservation and enhancement of the country's cultural heritage. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Tuesday. Izvestia tells about its history and traditions.

Cultural Worker's Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday

One of the first mentions of the celebration of the Cultural Worker's Day dates back to 1996. At that time, the festival was held in the Naro-Fominsk district of the Moscow region, and it was organized by poet and composer Igor Gerasimov and director Oksana Akatskova. However, the celebration was not official and was held exclusively at the local level.

Over time, similar holidays began to appear in other regions of Russia. In 2007, Alexander Sokolovsky, Doctor of Art History, who was then Minister of Culture, proposed making the celebration official and setting a single date for it. The initiative was approved, and in August, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree proclaiming March 25 as Cultural Worker's Day.

Traditions of Cultural Workers' Day on March 25

Traditionally, on the eve of the holiday, awards of the President and government of Russia in the field of culture are presented. Honorary awards are given to young cultural figures, authors of works of literature and art for childhood and youth, as well as outstanding artists, heads of creative teams, artists, writers, architects, directors and other culprits of the celebration.

In addition, various cultural events are held throughout the country on March 25. The museum staff organizes exhibitions and excursions, classes for schoolchildren, literary evenings and meetings with authors of famous works are held in libraries. Theaters invite viewers to charity concerts and street performances, and cinemas show cult films of the 20th and 21st centuries.
