The court recognized the crimes of the German Nazis in the Murmansk region during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) as genocide of the peoples of the USSR. This was reported on March 24 by the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia.

"Based on archival documents, the investigation was able to recreate an objective picture of the Nazis committing brutal crimes against peace and humanity, which resulted in the death and injury of civilians and mass destruction in the Murmansk region," the agency said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

It is specified that the capital of the Kola Arctic was a strategic target of the invaders. From the very beginning of the Second World War, thousands of high-explosive bombs were dropped on Murmansk by enemy aircraft, and civilian infrastructure facilities were severely bombed. At the same time, Murmansk residents did not stop working to contribute to the victory.

"The evidence gathered by the investigation of the criminal activities of the Nazi invaders in the Murmansk region became another confirmation of the inhuman Hitlerite plan to exterminate the Soviet people," the Investigative Committee concluded.

Earlier, on February 14, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation announced that the crimes of the Nazis in the Arkhangelsk Region during the Second World War were recognized as genocide. Crimes committed in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, in the White, Barents and Kara Seas were also recognized as genocide.
