The escalation around Iran will grow in the coming months, as the United States may launch attacks on the nuclear facilities of the Middle Eastern state. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 24.

On the eve of the special envoy of the American President Donald Trump, Stephen Witkoff, said that the United States could start a military conflict with Iran if alternative ways to overcome differences between states did not bring effect. According to him, the United States will continue to insist on the inadmissibility for Iran to have nuclear weapons and to develop in this direction.

"In the Middle East, the United States has identified its main task: to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. In turn, Tehran will strive to obtain all available weapons to realize its interests at the regional and global levels. To begin with, Washington will try to force Iran to abandon nuclearization through public threats and economic blackmail. It's unlikely to work," Feldman commented.

In this case, he added, air strikes could be launched against facilities where, from the point of view of American intelligence, uranium enrichment is carried out. However, according to the source, Trump is likely to hesitate to carry out such an operation.

"He will try to conclude a deal with Iran with the mediation of Russia. Whatever the final result of the behind-the-scenes bargaining turns out to be, the American leadership will try to sell it to society as another victory for its president. Well, Iran will continue to increase its military potential," the political scientist concluded.

On Sunday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry called the current form of the nuclear deal unviable. On March 19, the Axios portal, citing sources, reported that Washington had set a two-month deadline for concluding a new nuclear deal with Tehran. It is clarified that it is not yet clear whether the two-month period starts from the moment the letter is delivered or from the moment negotiations begin.
