Georgian President withdraws lawsuit against foreign agents from Constitutional Court

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has withdrawn from the Constitutional Court a lawsuit against the adoption of the law on foreign agents, which was filed by former head of state Salome Zurabishvili. Ambebi writes about this on March 24 with reference to the press service of the head of state.
As emphasized in the statement, the Georgian law on foreign agents "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" contributes to the protection of the national sovereignty of the state and the stable development of the country.
"The law serves to inform the public as much as possible about the origin of the financing of organizations pursuing the interests of a foreign power. Accordingly, Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili has decided to drop the constitutional claim," the statement said.
The Law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" was adopted by the Parliament of Georgia on May 14, 2024. In July, then-President Zurabishvili filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court demanding the repeal of the law. On December 20, 2024, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the country's authorities were ready to discuss amendments to the law on foreign agents if they were told exactly what was wrong with its norms and how they violated the principles of law.
