The oil spill occurred at the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Ecuador, located in the north of the country on the Coca River. On March 22, the Ministry of Energy and Non-renewable Natural Resources of the Republic announced this on the X network (ex. Twitter).

"The Ministry informs that this Saturday, March 22, 2025, at approximately 06:00 (14:00 Moscow time), a spill of petroleum products from the Shushufindi–Quito pipeline was registered in the San Francisco de Borja sector, El Chaco canton, Napo province," the press service of the department informed..

Operational services are currently working on installing a floating barrier on the Coca River upstream from the Coca Codo Sinclair water intake infrastructure to prevent impacts on the civilian infrastructure of the country's main hydroelectric power plant.

The agency clarified that Coca Codo Sinclair operates and brings 1,100 MW to the national energy system.

"A decision will be made in the coming hours on whether or not the operation of the HPP will be stopped in order to protect its electromechanical infrastructure," the ministry said.

Before that, on December 1, 2024, it became known about a fuel leak on the Druzhba oil pipeline in Poland. During the investigation, it was established that a spill of an oil-like substance had occurred on the field. PERN has preemptively shut down one of the pumping substations. The Polish operator of the Druzhba pipeline, PERN, did not deny any of the versions about the causes of the incident, including intentional damage, until the end of the internal investigation.
