US President Donald Trump can undermine NATO's activities in various ways, including without leaving the alliance. This was announced on March 22 by the American magazine Newsweek.

"In fact, the White House has many options if it wants to undermine the alliance. According to experts, in order to actually end NATO without formally withdrawing, the Trump administration only needs to strike at the trust that underlies the very existence of the alliance," the newspaper writes.

So, in order to avoid all the formalities, Trump, according to associate professor at the University of Exeter David Blagden, for example, may simply force other member countries to question the US commitment to Article 5 of the NATO Collective Defense Treaty.

"The trust that was the foundation of the relationship has already begun to erode," says Neil Melvin, director of International Security at the Royal United Institute for Defense Studies (RUSI) think tank.

The publication noted that the United States may also stop participating in NATO exercises in order to assess how the allied countries will respond to the crises in Europe. In addition, US representatives may stop attending certain meetings, especially those related to the deployment of troops or support for Europe. This may serve as a signal that America will not stand up for Europe in any possible conflict.

Newsweek also talked about how Trump can withdraw the United States from NATO, but this process takes time. To do this, the American leader must notify the partners of such a decision a year in advance, according to the 13th article of the alliance. In addition, according to former NATO representative Edward Christie, Trump will need to coordinate his decision with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.

On March 19, NBC News, citing sources, reported on the possible intention of the administration of US President Donald Trump to abandon the command of NATO forces in Europe. According to the publication, America is considering a plan to abandon the role of Supreme Commander of the united armed forces.

In January, Trump said that he was not sure about continuing to sponsor NATO, as the United States protects the bloc's members, but does not receive assistance in return. According to him, he will seek to ensure that the states of the North Atlantic Alliance increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
