The US government is going to revoke the temporary legal status of more than half a million migrants who previously legally entered the country under former President Joe Biden, Bloomberg reported on March 22.

According to the agency, the relevant document should be officially published on March 25. It outlines a plan by the administration of US President Donald Trump to revoke work permits and ban citizens of Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela from staying in the country. Previously, 532,000 migrants received temporary legal status, but it is not clear how many of them can still legally stay in the United States.

"The [Trump] administration has already refused to extend the temporary status for Venezuelans and Haitians," the article says.

According to the author of the article, the measures taken by the American authorities "mark a significant tightening of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown."

The temporary legal status program was launched by Biden in 2023 as a legal alternative to dangerous border crossings. During the election campaign, Trump promised to put an end to illegal migration on the southwestern border and carry out the largest deportation in the country's history if elected.

On March 20, The Washington Post reported on the intention of the administration of US President Donald Trump to use the military to capture and detain illegal migrants who live along the border with Mexico. Formally, such measures would be contrary to federal law, which prohibits active troops from participating in most law enforcement operations.
