The narcologist spoke about the effect of smoking on the sense of smell and taste

Smoking cigarettes has a negative effect on taste and olfactory receptors. Ruslan Isaev, a psychiatrist, narcologist, head of the psychiatric and narcological Clinic of Dr. Isaev, president of the Independent Narcological Guild, told Gazeta about this on March 22.Ru».
"Firstly, exposure to chemical compounds contained in tobacco smoke leads to permanent irritation of the oral and nasal mucosa. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals, including nicotine, tar, formaldehyde, ammonia, and heavy metals," the expert warned.
Due to their toxicity, these elements dull the taste and olfactory receptors, and also cause inflammation.
Tobacco smoke can also cause burns and micro-damage to the mucous membrane. This can cause the taste buds of the tongue not to perceive the taste of food.
"Interestingly, the main taste sensations (salty, sweet, bitter, sour) do not disappear completely, but their intensity is significantly reduced. As a result, smokers often prefer more pronounced tastes — spicy, salty, and spice—rich foods that compensate for the loss of receptor sensitivity," the doctor noted.
On March 12, the Trans-Baikal Territory plans to increase the distance for smoking from bus stops and cafes. The relevant bill was considered by the Committee on State Policy and Local Self-government of the regional parliament. The initiative is aimed at preserving health and maintaining a comfortable environment.
