The US Embassy in Italy appealed to egg producers with a request to supply goods to American retail chains and was refused. This was reported on March 21 by the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

"We have received many requests from the USA, but we are also at the limit of production capacity and cannot guarantee supplies," commented Michele Barbetta, a farmer from Carceri in the Padua region and president of the Confagricoltura Veneto poultry sector.

Lara Sanfrancesco, director of the national Union of meat and egg producers of Unaitalia, noted that production in the country is designed for the domestic market and does not have the capacity for export.

Gian Luca Bagnara, the national president of Assoavi and the Copa-Cogeca egg and poultry working group in Brussels, told the newspaper that he accepted the offer for a raffle. According to him, farmers need at least six months to increase production in sufficient volume.

"We have two peaks, now and at the end of the year, but we may have six months of additional production. Egg shipments to the United States, among other things, may be an opportunity to open up new prospects," he said.

Earlier, on October 31, 2024, the Reuters news agency reported that the incidence of influenza among poultry has increased in the European Union. It was clarified that flu outbreaks can lead to a viral epidemic.

At the same time, White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt on March 19 accused the administration of former US President Joe Biden of killing almost 8 million chickens across the country before his departure.

CNN reported on January 14 that U.S. citizens were faced with a shortage of eggs due to avian flu. It was specified that the restoration of stability in the food market in the country may take from six to nine months. In addition, the shortage has led to higher prices for eggs. On February 7, it became known that amid the shortage, stores in the United States imposed restrictions on the purchase of eggs.
