The Russian Ambassador spoke about cooperation with Tanzania in the naval sphere

Russia and Tanzania are holding consultations on the further development of relations in the naval sphere, negotiations on the construction of a Russian naval base are not underway, Russian Ambassador to Tanzania Andrey Avetisyan said in an interview with Izvestia.

Moscow is interested in the logistical potential of the sultanate - its ports may allow Russia to develop transportation along a more economical route

"There are no such negotiations, although consultations are taking place on the further development of Russian-Tanzanian relations in the naval sphere," he said.

Business and friendly visits by ships of the Russian Navy are carried out on a regular basis. In particular, the recent visit of the Baltic Fleet patrol ship "Intrepid" to the port of Dar es Salaam had a great resonance, the diplomat stressed.

In 2018, Russia and Tanzania signed an agreement on military-technical cooperation. More than 1.3 thousand representatives of the Tanzanian national armed forces have been trained at universities of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian ambassador said.
