In Zimbabwe, police have arrested three men who robbed the home of the parents of the new head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Christy Coventry, in Harare. This was announced on Friday, March 21, by the Pindula portal.
"The robbers stole cash and valuables worth more than $90,000, including some Coventry Olympic memorabilia," the publication says.
The incident occurred on March 10. Men armed with pistols tied up Coventry's parents and took them hostage.
During the robbery, they stole $15,000 in cash, jewelry worth $60,000, three hair dryers, Coventry Olympic swimsuits, travel bags, hearing aids worth $5,000 and three hunting rifles.
It is specified that two participants in the robbery will soon appear in court on charges of burglary.
The day before, Coventry became the first woman to serve as president of the IOC. She will take office on June 23 of this year. Coventry herself compared winning the election to receiving her first medal in 2004.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Coventry on his election. He pointed to the unique experience of the Zimbabwean woman and her interest in promoting the noble Olympic ideals. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko also sent his wishes to the athlete.
