Washington currently has no plans to lift financial sanctions against Damascus. This was announced on March 21 by the official representative of the US State Department, Tammy Bruce, at a briefing.

"The sanctions dynamics are not changing, and at this stage there are no plans to change it. The existing measures <...> remain," she said.

At the same time, Bruce noted that a special license is in effect for Syria, allowing financial transactions to circumvent sanctions, provided that these funds are used to stabilize the situation in the country.

Earlier, on February 24, the EU suspended sanctions against Syria in the fields of energy and transport. The Council also decided to exclude five organizations from the list of individuals subject to freezing of funds and economic resources, introduce exceptions for the establishment of banking relations between Syrian banks and financial institutions in the territories of the participating countries and extend the application of humanitarian exclusion indefinitely.

Later, on March 6, the UK lifted sanctions against more than 24 Syrian organizations, including the Central Bank of Syria and a number of oil companies, as well as the Syrian Arab Airlines airline.
