The fence erected by Poland in Belovezhskaya Pushcha led to flooding of territories on the Belarusian side on an area of more than 19 hectares. This was reported on March 21 by the BelTA news agency with reference to Victoria Voronova, head of the Department for the Use and Protection of Water Resources at the Ministry of Natural Resources of Belarus.

According to her, the major fence violated the natural hydrological regime of the forest area, which leads to the death of trees and a change in species diversity. In addition, limiting the migration routes of wild animals can impoverish their gene pool.

Voronova also noted that Belarus remains a party to international agreements on the protection of transboundary waters, but a number of European countries, including Poland, do not comply with obligations on the exchange of environmental data.

According to the "Newspaper.Ru", the construction of the 5.5 m high and 186 km long barrier, completed in June 2022, was undertaken by Poland to prevent illegal migration.

Earlier, on March 18, it was reported that the Polish border service was resorting to excessive use of force against migrants on the border with Belarus. Polish border guards beat asylum seekers, shoot at them with rubber bullets, strip them naked and unleash dogs on them.
