The SUV segment remains the largest in the Russian car market, but its share is declining. This was announced on March 21 by the analytical agency Autostat.

According to the results of two months of 2025, 111.4 thousand new crossovers and SUVs were sold in Russia, which is 66.6% of the total sales of new cars. A year ago, the market share of such cars was higher: in January —February 2024, it was 70.5%, but SUV sales decreased more than the market, by 14.2% and 9.3%, respectively.

Autostat experts explain this situation by the decline in sales of Chinese-made cars and the growing popularity of domestic ones. While the "Chinese" are overwhelmingly represented in the SUV segment, Russian brands mainly offer B-class cars.

During the same period, sales of new B-class cars increased by 4.8% to 39.1 thousand units. In this regard, their market share has also increased, if in the first months of 2024 it reached 20.3%, then in the same period of 2025 it increased to 23.4%.

On March 20, Sergey Tselikov, CEO of the Autostat analytical agency, said that the Russian car market could shrink by 40% year-on-year.

By the end of March, sales may exceed 80,000 new cars, which is about 2.6% more than the failed sales in February and probably 10% lower than in January, he noted.

If in March 2024, sales turned out to be abnormally high in anticipation of April changes in the rules for importing cars into the country, now there is no spring demand, Tselikov said. In the first half of March, sales amounted to slightly more than 40 thousand new passenger cars.
