When a tourist arrives at the hotel, the administration asks to show an identity document. But not all documents are suitable for this purpose. For example, a foreign passport that is used abroad is not suitable for settling in Russia. Alexey Sonov, Head of the Palmira Palace Resort & SPA's booking department, told Izvestia why this is happening and what to do if your passport is forgotten or lost.

"A Russian passport is required to check into a hotel in Russia. A foreign passport, although it confirms your identity abroad, is not enough inside the country. The fact is that it lacks some of the information that is required to identify a citizen in Russia. However, there is an exception: if you permanently reside abroad and your passport is issued by the Russian consulate in another country, it may be accepted for settlement," he explained.

The expert stressed that identification at the hotel is not just a formality. It helps to prevent possible offenses and ensures the safety of both guests and the hotel itself.

If a tourist has forgotten or lost his passport before checking into the hotel, he has several options that can be taken. Firstly, some hotels may offer alternative ways of checking in, for example, through biometrics, if the traveler's data is available in a Single biometric System, Sonov drew attention.

"Secondly, contact the nearest department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obtain a temporary identity card. It will take some time, but it is a legitimate way to solve the problem. Thirdly, if possible, ask relatives or friends to bring your passport or temporary ID," he advised.

At the same time, it is a common story when a woman got married, changed her last name and immediately applied for a new passport and cannot present either the old or the new one at the hotel. If a traveler planning to check into a hotel recently got married and changed her last name, but has not yet received a new passport, then she should not rush to change it before the trip. She can check into the hotel using her old passport, as it is valid for another 90 days after the name change, the expert added.

To check in children under the age of 14, you must present a birth certificate, and upon reaching this age, a child's passport. If the child is traveling not with his parents, but, for example, with his grandmother, it is necessary to prepare a notarized consent from the parents, said Sonov.

"Always take your passport with you, especially if you plan to check into a hotel. It is also recommended to have a driver's license or medical policy with you — they can help in some situations.

Save electronic copies of documents in the cloud or in the Gosuslugi application. And book the hotel in advance and save the booking confirmation — this will simplify the check—in process and provide you with comfortable accommodation," he concluded.

Earlier, on February 23, experts from the OneTwoTrip travel planning service told Izvestia about popular spring destinations. According to their information, Russians are more likely to choose Sochi, Lake Ladoga and Dagestan for recreation. Experts singled out Egypt, Japan and Turkey among the foreign destinations.
