The confiscation of Russia's assets frozen in Belgium is unacceptable because of the systemic risks to the entire global financial system. This was stated on March 20 by Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever in an interview with reporters following a meeting of the leaders of the European Union (EU) countries in Brussels.

He noted that the confiscation of the money would be an "act of war" against Moscow.

"We don't live in a fantasy world. We are in the real world, where if you take 200 billion euros from someone, you will face consequences," the European newspaper Politico quoted him as saying.

According to de Wever, Russia's frozen assets cannot be considered as a kind of "piggy bank" that you can just take and "smash with a hammer" to get money out of it.

Earlier, on March 18, Bloomberg reported on the intensification of discussions between the UK and the European Union regarding the confiscation of frozen Russian funds. It was noted that London and Brussels have made progress on this issue, despite the resistance of a number of European countries, including Belgium and Germany.
