Germany approves raising the country's public debt limit for defense spending


On March 21, representatives of the federal states of Germany in the Bundesrat approved constitutional amendments that would increase the country's public debt beyond the limit for financing defense spending. This was reported on March 21 by the Tagesschau newspaper.
53 out of 69 deputies voted in favor of amending the constitution, while the amendments required 2/3 of the votes in the Bundesrat to be approved. Representatives of the federal states of Brandenburg, Saxony–Anhalt, Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate opposed the growth of the national debt.
Next, the draft amendments will be sent to the President of Germany, Frank–Walter Steinmeier, for signature.
The Bundestag approved amendments to the German constitution, suggesting an increase in the volume of public debt on March 18. According to the draft, in the future, all defense expenditures in the federal budget of Germany exceeding 1% of production will no longer fall under the debt limit stipulated in the basic law of the country.
