Russians have become more interested in home-grown seedlings. So, many of them choose mini-varieties of vegetables — gherkins and cherries. This provokes an increase in demand for specialized goods, which increased by 4.7% compared to 2024. On March 22, Izvestia was told about this in the Leman PRO (Leroy Merlin) chain of stores for repairs, construction and home improvement.

"The amount of soil depends on the crops being grown. 1-2 liters are enough for greens, 5-7 liters are required for peppers and eggplants, and 7-10 liters for cucumbers and tomatoes. For those who are just starting to learn gardening and want to create a mini-vegetable garden on the windowsill, even 10 liters of soil mixture will be enough. The choice of containers for planting also plays an important role," the company said.

As Oksana Blagaya, head of the Garden category at Leman PRO, emphasized, drainage holes must be present in planting tanks that remove excess moisture and prevent root rot. If this condition is met, you can choose any plastic tableware, containers, pots and crates based on budget, convenience and aesthetic preferences.

The company noted that soils, cassettes for seedlings, mini greenhouses with a lid, seedling bags, peat briquettes, peat tablets and all kinds of racks for seedlings with the installation of lamps for illumination have become one of the most in demand products. In addition, there was a noticeable increase in demand for universal soils and fertilizers, which increased by an average of 4.7% over the past year.

In addition to mini-varieties of vegetables, Russians prefer to grow various types of greens at home, Leman PRO said. These are, for example, dill, basil, parsley and many varieties of lettuce. Microgreens are also particularly popular. The company attributed the high demand to its unpretentiousness and quick results. Leman PRO added that micro-jelly and miniature varieties of vegetables remain in demand all year round.

On March 19, Nikita Chaplin, a State Duma deputy from the United Russia faction, chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow region, told Izvestia about the preparation of seedlings in March. According to him, this period is the beginning for many vegetable crops. First of all, he advised planting tomatoes, peppers and eggplants in March. He advised choosing varieties that are adapted to the region of residence and resistant to diseases.
