The idea of the administration of US President Donald Trump to take control of Ukrainian nuclear power plants "caught Kiev by surprise." This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on March 20.

"Nuclear energy infrastructure was not included in previous negotiations on an agreement on U.S. access to critical minerals," said Oleksiy Ryabchyn, former Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.

On March 19, Trump proposed to the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, to actually transfer control of Ukrainian nuclear power plants to the United States. According to him, this would strengthen the protection of sanctions.

The next day, Trump announced the imminent signing of a resource deal with Ukraine. The American leader made this statement after signing a decree on increasing mining in the United States.
