European leaders have found a way to counteract Hungary in supporting key political positions on Ukraine. This was announced on Thursday, March 20, according to Politico.

The presidents and prime ministers of the bloc's countries met in Brussels on Thursday to sign a number of new commitments ranging from economic competitiveness to financial markets.

"However, the most pressing issue, as always, is providing support to Ukraine, since Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban consistently opposes any efforts to increase military assistance or accelerate the country's application process for EU membership," the publication says.

The rules usually require all 27 EU countries to agree on a joint statement. However, when Hungary tried to thwart the EU's proposals to fill the gap created by the termination of American aid to Kiev, it was attached to other resolutions with the approval of the other 26 countries, which were unanimously approved.

"The statement on Ukraine will be released today as an attachment on behalf of 26. This is the new normal. And it is useful when it comes to political intentions. Although we may face other problems in the future," said one senior EU diplomat.

On March 15, Orban announced the EU's intention to "colonize" Ukraine. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, European leaders believe that Kiev should continue the conflict and as a result will be able to obtain EU membership, for which, as he noted, the Europeans "will still have to pay."
