France and Italy are delaying the process of agreeing on the allocation of $5.4 billion in a reduced aid package from the European Union (EU) to Ukraine for the purchase of 2 million artillery shells. This was reported by Bloomberg on March 20.

"While the majority of the 27 member states gathered in Brussels on Thursday rallied around the allocation of critical funding for military assistance, France and Italy are delaying commitments on specific financial volumes," the agency informed.

A senior EU foreign policy official, Kaya Kallas, said she was still keen for leaders to sign at least part of the plan, committing €5 billion to the purchase of 2 million artillery shells.

It clarifies that Italy and other countries are asking for more technical and financial details and have stated that the initiative is still in development. At the same time, French diplomats said that their priority now is to implement the part of the G7 loan package allocated by the EU to Kiev in the amount of €18 billion.

On March 14, Euractiv announced that the European Union (EU) intends to create a voluntary fund for military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of €20-40 billion to circumvent Hungary's veto. It was specified that each country would contribute to the fund depending on its "economic weight." At the same time, the EU will consider as its contribution €1.9 billion of profits from frozen Russian assets.
