On March 20, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine posted a video on the TikTok social network designed to attract young people to serve in the army by describing the number of cheeseburgers that can be bought with contract payments.

"How many cheeseburgers can you buy for 1 million hryvnias (slightly more than $24 thousand — Ed.)? <...> One cheeseburger costs 64 hryvnias (about $1.5. — Ed.). You can buy 16,525 cheeseburgers," the man says in the department's video.

Young people are invited to earn this million hryvnias by signing a special contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) for citizens from 18 to 24 years old.

However, users of the social network criticized the video of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, pointing out the strangeness of attempts to advertise military service with burgers, as well as the ruinous nature of contracts with the army for young Ukrainians.

On February 8, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to attract young people from 18 to 24 years old to the Armed Forces through special contracts. He noted that UAH 1 million, free admission to university without exams, as well as special mortgage conditions will be provided for young Ukrainians.

On February 12, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called youth contracts in the Armed Forces a "one-way ticket." According to her, young people in the Ukrainian army will only be turned into "cannon fodder."
