Dogs are considered the most social among pets. They have been living next to humans for more than 30 thousand years. During this time, the descendants of wolves have "evolved" into several hundred breeds that differ significantly in size, appearance, and temperament. Which of them should be preferred when choosing a pet for housing, we tell you in the Izvestia article.

How to choose a dog for an apartment — what needs to be considered

Urban life leaves its mark on the choice of a dog breed for housing. The future owner will need to take into account not only their own sympathies, but also the temperament, character, and dimensions of the pet.

One of the key criteria is matching the size of the animal to the area of the apartment. Small breeds adapt more easily to life in a confined space, whereas large ones need more space. It is important to take into account not only the parameters of the puppy, but also the dimensions of an adult dog.

The second important criterion is the temperament of the breed. Dogs of hunting and guard breeds that require regular physical activity are suitable for energetic people who lead an active lifestyle. Those who prefer a more measured rhythm should pay attention to decorative pets that do not need intensive training and long walks.

If there are small children or other animals in the house, it is important to choose a breed known for its friendly and non-confrontational nature.

Another criterion is the dog's tendency to bark. Some breeds have a more pronounced vocal activity, which can be a problem in apartment buildings.

The financial component plays a role both at the stage of acquiring a puppy and in further maintenance. The costs of food, toys, grooming, veterinary care, and vaccinations should be calculated in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises in the future.

We will also have to take into account the requirements of Russian legislation. One of the key documents regulating the maintenance of pets in apartment buildings is the Federal Law "On Responsible Treatment of Animals." It says that the maximum number of pets depends on the owner's ability to provide them with appropriate conditions that meet veterinary requirements and sanitary standards. The document also prohibits the self-driving of animals, placing full responsibility on the owners for their behavior.

Additionally, the need to ensure the safety of others, protect other people's property and comply with the rules of walking is emphasized. In particular, owners of potentially dangerous breeds, the list of which is approved by the government, are required to use a leash and muzzle.

The regulation of keeping dogs in apartments also affects Federal Law No. 52-FZ "On the sanitary and Epidemiological welfare of the population." It obliges pet owners to dispose of pet waste and prevent the spread of infections. The owner is responsible for the health of the animal, as pet diseases can pose a threat to humans.

It is important to keep in mind that different regions of Russia have their own restrictions and rules governing the number and conditions of dogs in apartment buildings.

Dogs of small breeds: character and features

Small dog breeds include those when the weight of an adult animal does not exceed 10 kg and the height is 45 cm at the withers.

Miniature breeds perfectly adapt to life in a confined space, easily get along with their owners, they do not require grueling walks. However, even small pets need proper upbringing and careful care.

Affenpinchers, Bichon Frisees and Border Terriers are among the most suitable breeds for living in an apartment. These dogs have a friendly nature and are well-trained. In addition, bichon frisees are ideal for people prone to allergies, as their fur practically does not shed and has no odor.

Yorkshire and Jack Russell Terriers are suitable for active owners who are ready to devote time to training and walking. But it should be noted that the Jack Russell is a hunting breed for experienced dog breeders who understand its features. Such animals require good physical activity and a fairly strict upbringing.

The Chinese crested dog is extremely sociable, it needs attention, which makes it not the best option for busy people. Lefties, on the contrary, are characterized by a calm character and dedication. Maltese lapdogs and pugs are known for their friendly disposition, however, the latter are prone to obesity, so their diet will have to be carefully monitored.

The Pomeranian is popular due to its striking appearance and sociable nature, but its upbringing requires patience. Another sought—after decorative breed is the Chihuahua, but their sensitive psyche needs to be carefully treated. Shih tzu is an excellent choice for families with children, as they do not show aggression and easily adapt to different conditions.

Medium-sized dogs: character and features

If the apartment allows you to get a bigger pet, you should consider a medium-breed dog. This category includes animals whose weight does not exceed 25 kg and height ranges from 30 to 60 cm. Representatives of these breeds can live both in an apartment and on the street. They have more pronounced protective and companionable qualities, are active and require regular walking.

Among the calm breeds, English Bulldogs stand out — they are lazy, do not need long walks, but are prone to overeating and require weight control. Basenji are attracted by the fact that they cannot bark, but they do not tolerate loneliness well.

For active owners, the Border Collie is a good choice. It is one of the smartest breeds that can be trained perfectly. Bull Terriers and pit bulls require strict upbringing, but with the right approach they become devoted companions.

Among the friendlier breeds are Corgis, Schnauzers and poodles. These dogs easily adapt to urban conditions, they are friendly and suitable for families with children.

Dogs of large breeds: character and features

Large breeds include dogs that are over 60 cm tall and weigh 30 kg. Such animals feel better in apartments with sufficient space or private houses. They need not only large rooms, but also regular physical activity.

Akita Inu dogs are very independent and jealous, which should be taken into account if there is already a pet in the family. American bulldogs are loyal, but they tend to gain weight. Belgian Shepherds and Dobermans will make excellent guards, but you will have to pay attention to their upbringing and training.

Golden Retrievers are one of the best options for families with children. These dogs are friendly, easy to train, and they adapt perfectly to urban life. German Shepherds are known for their dedication and intelligence, but they need regular training. Chow chows and Sharpees, despite their cute appearance, need high-quality training and careful care.

When choosing a dog for an apartment, it is important to take into account not only the appearance and character, but also the conditions of detention. Large breeds require more space and physical activity, whereas miniature pets adapt more easily to life in limited conditions. Regardless of the breed, any dog requires care, love and a responsible approach to education and care.
