The United States may put pressure on the European Union (EU) in order for Brussels to make any compromises for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. There are no grounds for the EU to put pressure on the United States to help Kiev yet. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 20.

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg, citing an unnamed senior European official, reported that Brussels would never agree to Russia's terms on Ukraine. It is noted that French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas also said on Wednesday that Russia's conditions were "unrealistic."

"These references to high-ranking unnamed officials determine my answer. Who it is, what it is, what it determines or determines, is still a big question. We must proceed from the reality that exists on earth. At the moment, there are no grounds and prerequisites to say that Brussels will put pressure on Washington in connection with initiatives to support Ukraine," Denisov commented.

He said that there are a number of reasons why the EU will not be able to put pressure on the United States. Firstly, Brussels has limited resources for such measures. Secondly, the policy of the American President Donald Trump implies that in the event of such steps by the EU, Washington may resort to retaliatory pressure, the political scientist noted.

At the same time, he said, under the current leadership in the EU, Brussels will continue to help Ukraine. However, the source added, the Trump team is clearly interested in ensuring that EU countries follow his policy.

"This may be a real prerequisite for the Americans to put pressure on them or convince their colleagues to make a number of compromises in other ways," he concluded.

Bloomberg reported on March 19 that U.S. officials had informed their European counterparts that the EU would have to participate in any peace agreement on Ukraine. The American side considers the association's participation necessary, since Russia wants to achieve the lifting of sanctions imposed by it as part of the deal.

Prior to that, on March 14, it was reported that the EU intends to create a voluntary fund for military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of €20-40 billion to circumvent Hungary's veto. Each country will contribute to the fund depending on its "economic weight". The European Union itself will consider as its contribution €1.9 billion of profits from frozen Russian assets.
