In order to identify a child's hearing problems in time, it is necessary to know about their symptoms, which manifest themselves in the behavior of the baby. On Thursday, March 20, Darya Zinovieva, a pediatric sign language specialist at the SM Clinic for children, told Gazeta.Ru».

Hearing problems in children are a serious pathology that needs to be noticed as early as possible. This is important to prevent possible difficulties in the development of the baby.

So, hearing loss can be congenital and acquired. The doctor noted that a child's hearing problems may occur due to intrauterine infections in a woman during pregnancy. In addition, hearing can be affected by asphyxia at birth, low body weight, prematurity, and viral diseases.

The specialist reminded that the hearing test according to the legislation of Russia is carried out for all newborns up to three months old. For this purpose, audiological screening is carried out at the maternity hospital, and then at the polyclinic at the place of residence.

However, Zinovieva warns that parents themselves need to be aware of the symptoms of hearing loss in a child, manifested in his behavior.

"In particular, this is a lack of reaction to sounds — the child does not respond to his name when he is called, does not react to loud noises (for example, a bang, a door lock). Speech problems include delayed speech development, incorrect pronunciation of words, and difficulty understanding speech. An inadequate reaction to sounds — the child may flinch or show other unusual reactions to loud sounds," the doctor shared.

According to the child's sign language specialist, such signs also include a child's misunderstanding of simple verbal instructions, the need to increase the volume of audio devices, and poor academic performance at school.

When these symptoms are detected, Zinovieva urges you to consult a specialist. She added that the detection of hearing problems at an early stage and the initiation of treatment play a major role in the timely development of the child.

Earlier, on March 6, Larisa Vylegzhanina, a surdologist and otorhinolaryngologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about the causes of hearing loss. So, a significant cause is noise damage. Noise over 80 decibels damages the inner ear over time and gradually impairs hearing. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can cause irreversible changes in the auditory organ, the doctor noted.
