- Georgescu's supporter Gavrile announced her withdrawal from the presidential race in Romania
Ana-Maria Gavrile, the leader of the Romanian opposition Party of Young People, a supporter of politician Calin Georgescu, announced on March 19 that she was withdrawing her candidacy from the presidential race.
According to her, the decision to refuse to participate in the elections was made in favor of the leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion.
"In order to give the sovereignist movement, supported by the Romanians, the best chance, I decided to withdraw from this race. I have done everything possible in this fight and I am confident in the correctness of the decision," she wrote on the social network Facebook (owned by the recognized extremist Meta company, its activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).
Euronews TV channel reported on March 1 about a protest rally in support of Georgescu in Bucharest.
On March 9, the electoral authority refused to register opposition politician Calin Georgescu as a candidate, deciding that the documents submitted by him did not comply with the requirements of the law. Later, on March 11, the Constitutional Court of Romania upheld the CEC's decision rejecting Georgescu's registration for the presidential election. The opposition leader himself called this step a blow to democracy.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official sources, Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote, but on November 28, the country's Constitutional Court demanded that the Central Election Commission recount the results. They were cancelled on December 6. Repeat elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
