A court in Chisinau has sentenced Alexander Nesterovsky, a deputy of the Moldovan parliament from the opposition Renaissance party, to 12 years in prison on corruption charges. This was reported on March 19 by the local Moldova1 TV channel.

"Deputy Alexander Nesterovsky was <...> found guilty of passive corruption, preparation and acceptance of financing for a political party from an organized criminal group," the report says.

It is noted that the judge sentenced the politician to a longer term than requested by the prosecutor.

Earlier, on February 26, the deputy head of Gagauzia, Viktor Petrov, told Izvestia that pressure on opposition politicians had become a familiar method of the Moldovan authorities. He stressed that these methods are illegal and, as practice shows, do not work.
