Law enforcement agencies have issued a warrant for the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. This was reported by the Sabah newspaper on March 19.

"Urgent news: a large-scale corruption operation has begun in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. During the meeting, a warrant was issued for the detention of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and his press adviser Murat Ongun," the newspaper said.

It is reported that about 100 arrest warrants have been issued in total. According to the newspaper, an anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul City Hall. It concerns the holding of city tenders, as well as clarifying the details of the interaction of opposition officials with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party. It is also reported that the houses of Imamoglu and Ongun are being searched.

According to the BBC, the day before, following a request from the Prosecutor General's Office, Istanbul University revoked the mayor's diploma on March 15. Because of these actions, Imamoglu will not be able to nominate his candidacy for the presidency.

Earlier, on January 20, it was reported that the mayor of Istanbul was under investigation because of the words about the children of the Prosecutor General. The chief prosecutor of the region has launched an investigation into Imamoglu's suspicion of threatening the family of Prosecutor General Akin Gyurlek.
